Learn Garment Sewing for Total Beginners
This is a course for total beginners that want to learn garment sewing. There are no prerequisites for this course, we will teach you everything you need to know to be a confident garment maker. In this class you learn how to use, thread and maintain your sewing machine. You will learn how to read a pattern, cutting techniques, taking your measurements and so much more.
We will make the following:
- A simple tote bag to get you comfortable with sewing
- A simple woven top: Remy Raglan (bust size range 31" - 61 1/2")
- A pair of elastic waist pants: Free Range Slacks (waist size range 23 1/2" to 61 3/4")
The patterns selected for this course are designed for female body figures however other options can be made available, please reach out for discussion.

Length: 7 week course, begins Sunday February 2nd through March 16th, 10am - 12:30pm. If a class is missed, make up classes can be arranged
Cost: $350 class only: fabric and patterns purchased separately, $550 for class with all materials included.
This is not just a class, this is intended for people serious about learning to sew garments. In 7 weeks you will have the skills and confidence to begin making your own clothes! You will leave this class with the following skills:
- Know your sewing machine
- How to read a pattern
- How to take your measurements and select a size
- Cutting skills
- Understanding fabric and how to select the right fabric for a project
- Pressing skills
- Seam finishes

Prerequisite: An ambition to sew garments!
What you will need to bring:
- Your own sewing machine in working order and the manual (be sure to include the foot pedal, presser foot attachments and power cords)
- Additional fabric and pattern requirements will be provided

Age: 14 and up
Class size: 5 students.
Cancellations: Cancellations must be done 2 weeks in advance to receive a refund. All make-up classes will be held Wednesday's 5:45 to 8:30. Be sure to schedule make-up classes in advance, multiple projects will likely be taught at this time.
Fabric Policy: We want our students to have the greatest chance for success and therefore strongly recommend buying fabric with our assistance. When you buy fabric from us we will work with you to match the right fabric to your skill level and your project goals.
Minimum Class Size: Minimum capacity of 3 students is required, if this is not met refunds will be provided.
Sewing Machine Maintenance: While we are able to help with minor troubleshooting on your machine, our focus needs to remain on advancing the class. Please be sure your machine is in working order, to get the best possible experience out of this class.
If you do not have the prerequisite skills required you will need to schedule a private session prior to the class.
This class will be taught in person at The Soda Plant, 266 Pine Street - Studio 221. Enter to the left of Haymaker Bun. Our studio is on the second floor, no elevator is available.
